Ouidah and the Slave Route: what to know before you go

A former slave-trading port, Ouidah is today one of the great places of remembrance in West Africa. It is also the spiritual heart of vodun.

The Slave Route

The route covers four kilometres, from the old auction square to the Gate of No Return, facing the ocean. With a guide, you understand each stage of this history.

Vodun in Ouidah

Between the Temple of Pythons, the sacred forest of Kpassè and the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, the town shows beliefs that have lived side by side for centuries. During vodun festivals, the Egoungoun masqueraders appear in embroidered costumes.

Planning your visit

  • Ouidah is about 40 km from Cotonou: one day is enough.
  • You can combine it with Grand-Popo for a two-day stay on the coast.
  • A local guide makes the visit much richer.
